Depressive symptoms and risk of dementia

Depression is associated with an increased risk of dementia and AD in older men and women over 17 years of follow-up. Depression is associated with cognitive impairment in older adults and a 2001 meta-analysis of case-control and prospective studies of the association between depression and dementia concluded that history of depression approximately doubled the risk for dementia.
